MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #328 • Sept/Oct* 2010

MRR #328 has hit the newsstands! This month we have an interview with Roger and Vinnie of AGNOSTIC FRONT, the last interview by Mr. Bruce Roehrs (RIP), from his all time favorite hardcore band. The PUFFY AREOLAS are continuing Ohio’s fine tradition of musical mutation, whilst SUPER WILD HORSES from Australia have been described as FLIPPER trying to play the SHOP ASSISTANTS, and we have some politically charged, female-fronted new wave from Macedonia courtesy of BERNAYS PROPAGANDA, which features ex-members of FPO. RAPE REVENGE from Canada is a mostly female, mostly power violence band, and DEATHRATS from DC are part of a crew of bands who are making sure hardcore stays harDCore in a most thrilling manner. Boston’s CONVERSIONS played driving complex punk inflected hardcore with some of the most ferocious female vocals. There are scene reports from New York City, and Brno in the Czech Republic, supposed to be one of the best places to play when touring Europe. We have cover art by Welly of long-running UK zine Artcore, and as always, the most extensive review section in punk, and all your favorite columnists!

*This issue mistakenly got labeled as the October issue when it shoulda been September. Don’t worry, the real October issue will come out as scheduled, and subscribers will get 12 issues this year. We apologize for the confusion.

As promised, next week we’re gonna go back to the future, so if you’ve taken some killer photos this summer, send them!!!

If you shoot shows and have photos you want to submit for the MRR Blog, send to: Be sure to put “MRR Photo Blog” in the subject. Include your name, the band, where and when it was shot. Just send your best photos – edit tightly. Three to five photos is plenty. We will be exercising a little quality control here…not everything sent in will be posted. Please size your photos so they are 500 pixels (72 dpi) at the longest side.

There are a lot of awesome photographers out there shooting shows…and there are a lot of unseen archives of old shows. Show us what you’ve got!

New Band Spotlight: Las Rodilleras

August 5th, 2010 by

LAS RODILLERAS is a three-piece that hails from Spain, which is kicking out some rather impressive beach punk and garage as of late. This band (whose name means “knee pads”) has a new LP, Horror Pleni, which is yet another great release skirting the same genre, but uniquely combining elements of goth punk, garage and surf punk. These three ladies could share a stage with ULTRATUMBADOS or RATAS DEL VATICANO — even TY SEGALL fans might be into it, if they can take the darkness… Reminiscent of PARALISIS PERMANENTE in mood, and at times in vocals, their songs are atmospheric with reverbed guitars and somber yet rocking mid-tempo melodies. The vocals are a raspy and echoed female crooning that has some VIOLATORS and RICHARD HELL moments with great backups, like a more goth and more punk CRAMPS. They cover the GERMS’ “Forming.” Their lyrics are morbid and, no, this all-female band does not sound like SPITBOY. There are only 525 copies of their screen-printed LP, so get your hands on it! Check out this video of the title track!
