Monday Photo Blog: Tragedy, Vivid Sekt, and Bellicose Minds from Neil Rathbun!!

June 18th, 2012 by

For this installment of the Monday Photo Blog we’re going to PDX via the lens of Neil Rathbun. I like the low lighting in many of these shots as it really captures the dark and gritty nature of bands like Tragedy, Vivid Sekt, and Bellicose Minds. For more of Neil’s work, check out his flickr page here.

Record of the Week: CROSS STITCHED EYES Decomposition LP

June 13th, 2012 by

Their first record was really good, but on this release CROSS STITCHED EYES have set the bar into the stratosphere for the legions of punks diving into the world of modern hardcore punk. As steeped in KILLING JOKE and BAUHAUS as the sharp angular attack of early anarcho punk, tracks like “Animation” jerk to and fro with an uncomfortably drunken swagger, while “Suffocation” and “Existence” are undeniable plodding death rock masterpieces. There are still a few songs that bring to mind the RUDIMENTARY PENI comparisons that accompanied their debut, but the highlights of Decomposition are in their ability to make old sounds seem new again—all of the sensibilities of a brilliant ’80s death rock record crammed into a modern DIY box that even the most narrow-minded punks can get behind. A fukkn great record.

R.I.P. Jef Leppard

June 12th, 2012 by

Former guitarists of Voetsek Jef Leppard passed away two days ago as a result a motorcycle accident, and his partner Nikki is currently in the hospital in critical condition. Please read on for information about how to help and where everyone is gathering to remember Jeff:

Our community has lost a very loved/respected individual over the past 24 hours and for this we mourn, all in our unique ways. RIP Jef Leppard. Now we’re all gathering the light of the universe and sending it to Nikki Davis for a full recovery… I just left SFGH, she can not have visitors at this time/and prolly not for a couple days. Nikki’s mom Donna Lee Wayrynen Culbert and father Smiley are here with various family members. We are setting up a memorial for Jef at Lennon Rehearsal for this Saturday June 16 7-10pm. He will be cremated. Please pass this info along, they have so many friends and extended family who truly care for them…this has been devastating.

Please bring some $$$ to donate — Jef will be cremated and Nikki is facing mountings bills. This is a potluck and strictly a four-band bill.

And please spread the word on this. These two have helped so many of us out over the years. Now it’s our turn to pay them back in a small way.

Monday Photo Blog: Torch Runner! Masakari! More from Tanner Douglass!!!

June 11th, 2012 by

It was a short while back in the history of the  Monday Photo Blog when Tanner Douglass had some photos posted. Here’s some more. I think these are even better than the earlier shots. The action is more in your face, and the crispness of the images are incredible! Also, the tweaking of the colors give the photos a slight otherworldly feel. Once you’re done with these, aim your  browser over to tannerdouglassphotography for more pixel punk chaos.
