THIS EPISODE: Recorded over the summer with Mariam, KRÖMOSOM was on their West Coast leg with FRENZY! KRÖMOSOM is currently in the middle on a Japanese tour with SKIZOPHRENIA then DEATH DUST EXTRACTOR! Fuck shit up, dudes and come back this way!

Intro song:
KRÖMOSOM – Draw the Line

with a sample review and pics, and maybe you too can be a bona fide MRR web shitworker! Now, back to Will…

[caption id="attachment_5301" align="alignnone" width="480" caption="Acid Reflux (photo by Will Butler)"][/caption]

The first cold snap hit hard in November, well as cold as it will get randomly around then in North Carolina. I got sick as hell for a few weeks and hardly went out around that time. One exception was a show on the 13th that I had been looking forward to for quite some time. I’ll admit to being lame and I was not actually familiar with the band from Finland. I had seen their name before because it is proudly displayed on the front of a MRR that lives in my bathroom. Anywho, I had managed to see Acid Reflux a town over about 3/4 of a year ago and was really excited about seeing them again. I really like bands with little to no Internet presence. So on to the actual show… It was a bit cold, so I was bundled up.

[caption id="attachment_5314" align="alignleft" width="259" caption="Kakka-Hätä 77 (photo by Will Butler)"][/caption]

KAKKA-HÄTÄ 77 played a solid set. Very clean and snotty punk, people were getting into it, and I was having fun and taking pictures with my ADHD-addled brain. Next up was ACID REFLUX. Upon talking to them later, this was their last tour as a band! So this was my second and last time to see them play. Everyone raged extraordinarily hard for them and I was pretty surprised at the number of people who knew their lyrics and were shouting along. Ira, who booked the show and put it on at his house, was going insanely nuts the entire time and I couldn’t help but laugh at the faces he was making. Sparklers were affixed to their guitar while playing for some reason, they must have stopped through South of the Border or something. After Acid Reflux played, the place emptied out unfortunately before the last band. I think reason being the fact that they were supposed to be a surprise band and all the bigger bands had played.

So next and last up was BURMA. They are a group of younger kids who were X’ed up and seem to play a sort of hybrid Converge/Infest style. The mic got decimated during the Acid Reflux set so Matt just ran around stomping and screaming as loud as he could. He somehow punched his own face so hard he was bleeding at the end of their set. Drumming was on point. The night concluded with Acid Reflux running around shooting off fireworks and I think they all antiqued each other with face-fulls of confectionery sugar. All I was thinking at this point of the night was that I had to get out of here before I had to put up a rowdy band at my house, and that I actually had a really great night full of some varying styles of music. Distort Raleigh!

—Will Butler / Fastcore Photos

[caption id="attachment_5292" align="alignnone" width="435" caption="Burma (photo by Will Butler)"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_5295" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Acid Reflux (photo by Will Butler)"][/caption]

Even more photos from the show!

[gallery link="file" order="DESC" orderby="rand" exclude="5292, 5314, 5301, 5295, 5286, 5299"]
" data-medium-file="" data-large-file="" src="http://radio.maximumrocknroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Kromosom-435x289.jpg" alt="" title="Kromosom" width="435" height="289" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5540" />

This month our Record of the Week feature focuses on seven new releases from the amazing Tian An Men 89 Records label. For decades now, Luk Haas has traveled the most unreachable corners of the globe seeking out punk and underground rock scenes, and releasing music on Tian An Men 89 that the rest of the world would never otherwise get a chance to hear. The man is a true hero!

Punk from Lebanon! The first track on the BEIRUT SCUM SOCIETY side sounds like a slowed down FLAG OF DEMOCRACY’s “Madhouse.” The second song is more of a rock ‘n’ roll oldies/rockabilly, complete with harmonica, then the third continues in this vein with a more punk vibe to it, à la VIBRATORS with snotty vocals. DETOX reminds me of early 45 GRAVE with some RIK AGNEW-related moments, complete with keyboard. Then there is a hardcore jam that moshes into a punk breakdown mess in “Play a Fucking Instrument”—there is a lot going on here, but it’s cohesive and good. This definitely diverges from a path at times, but it’s firmly rooted in early ’80s punk, yet more aggressive than melodic—creative, weird and carnival-esque very early punk mixed with art punk shit, using irony and humor to address serious issues. I love the DETOX tracks on here, but the whole record is good and seriously solid if you wanna get weird…which I do.

—Mariam Bastani

Wow, writing about a Syrian punk band while shit is hitting the fan over there seems rather surreal. Tian An Men 89 has done it again, yet again delivering the goods! The first track has a street-punk beat that blends with a guitar solo that could only have been produced in the East: rich and intoxicating like pipe smoke or potent herbs. The second self-titled track sticks to a similar style, with some funky drumming and some cow-bell, while on the flip “Bakaloria” goes in a more rock ‘n’ roll direction, with choppy guitars and a dancey melody. The final track (“Sai’een”) is performed live and starts out with a ska-sounding guitar which turns into sad solo, accompanied by lyrics which I can tell are filled with pain, anger and sincerity. Who needs to speak a common language when you have music like this? A real gem that will be appreciated by anyone who understands what punk actually means, as opposed to (only) what it may sound like.
