New Blood! BRICKLAYER, TURTLE NECK, CONSOLIDATED PLASTICS and MALOKIO

November 6th, 2014 by

MRR magazine’s “New Blood” section is now a regular feature here on maximumrocknroll.com! See below for info on how to submit. Now, get to discovering some killer new shit…

Bricklayer

Band name:
BRICKLAYER

Date & location formed:
Bricklayer formed out of the ashes of Grimace in 2013, members live in Olympia and Seattle.

Reason for forming:
We formed because the guitar player for Grimace had to leave the band to take care of some life stuff and we all still wanted to continue the band but didn’t feel right doing it without him. Changed the name, added our friend Che to the lineup and boom! Bootdozer rides again.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are all written by Malcolm.

How would you describe your sound?
The sound is a blend of US hardcore , Oi, and good street punk. The sound is Grimace.

What’s in the future for this band?
Releasing a record and touring.

Links and contact info:
bricklayer.bandcamp.com

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
TURTLE NECK

Date & location formed:
Formed in the Clown Farm basement in Oly at the end of 2013.

Reason for forming:
I wrote all the songs for it when Adjustment To Society was broken down in Arizona for eight days and wrote them down on a Pepsi box. My best bud Taylor and I had conceptualized the band years ago. All the members skate aggressively and love punk.

TurtleNeck

What are your lyrics about?
Every single song is about skateboarding and how badass it is.

How would you describe your sound?
The songs are UK82 style with some melodic ’77 punk intros and some rock ’n’ roll. All the music Taylor and I loved when we were 13 and 14, ha.

What’s in the future for this band?
The future is certain for Turtle Neck. Skateboarding comes first, then the band. A West Coast tour is being planned for this fall. Shout outs to Seth Pickett Stick-it.

Consolidated Plastics photo cred The Commish

Consolidated Plastics (photo by The Commish)

Band name:
CONSOLIDATED PLASTICS

Date & location formed:
Fall equinox 2013. Also known as Todd’s landing date.

Reason for forming:
To express ourselves in a healthy and creative way.

What are your lyrics about?
Daily frustrations, various artistic movements of the 20th century, and the Home Shopping Network.

How would you describe your sound?
Rock ’n’ roll for test tube babies.

What’s in the future for this band?
First to be a significant building. Once achieved, total destruction.

Print

Band name:
MALOKIO

Date & location formed:
September 2013 in Montreal, Quebec.

Reason for forming:
We were in the band Silent Bones. We went on tour and the singer left the band when we came back, so we asked Lisa to sing, wrote a new set, and here we are.

What are your lyrics about?
Angry anarchist love songs sung in Italian, English, Spanish, and French that talk about a love/hate relationship with city life. Allegorical narratives influenced by science fiction and horror about systemic problems in society.

malokio

How would you describe your sound?
Melodic punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have a demo coming out soon and we want to play more shows outside of Montreal.

Record of the Week: GENERACION SUICIDA Todo Termina LP

November 4th, 2014 by

GeneracionSuicidaTodoTermina

This band has done a lot in its three or so years, and I think it just keeps getting better. They play catchy, sped-up, undistorted melodic punk steeped in the late ’70s, but with a hardcore urgency — a style that seems to have had more of a following in Europe this last decade than in the US (to our detriment, in my opinion). That said, I’m stoked that GENERACION SUICIDA has caught and maintained people’s attention and praise despite these inhospitable conditions characterized by hardcore fever. Hailing from the predominantly Latino area of South Los Angeles, their songs are all in Spanish. However, more than Spanish punk, their sound draws from Sweden’s the VICIOUS (as the band name would suggest), though the music is also comparable to AUTISTIC YOUTH, NEON PISS and YOUTH AVOIDERS. I really dig the infectious guitar leads on this record. My favorite track is “Rechazados por la Sociedad” — very, very catchy, melancholic punk, just the way I like it, with a chorus that reminds me of GORILLA ANGREB. Their lyrics in general deal with alienation and frustration with their surroundings—this song specifically references LA’s marginalized poor and homeless populations. My mind immediately goes to Skid Row (Sweden doesn’t have one of those!), very real. The record contains a dope fold-out poster insert with all the lyrics. Don’t sleep on this one!

Susana Martins as sent in a few photos of shows from the OCCII in Amsterdam for the Monday Photo Blog. I see the Spermbirds are still around. I wonder if their god still rides a skateboard, and if so, does he pad up these days? (Yuk! Yuk!) For more from Susan check out susanamar.tumblr.com.
