New Blood! TV-MA, BLOBS, and TRAVØLTA

October 8th, 2015 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
tvbanner

Artwork by Mathew Chandelier.

Artwork by Mathew Chandelier.

Date & location formed:
February 2014, New Orleans.

Reason for forming:
There aren’t enough bands in Nola and we had the desire to be a hella gay mostly P.O.C. & mostly female art punk band.

What are your lyrics about?
Punk scene politics.. anti capitalism.. addiction.. y’know. We also do some obscure-ish covers (Malaria!, Mars, Flipper)

How would you describe your sound?
N.O. Wave, No Wave, Art Punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
Our first tape “Project Punks” is up on bandcamp… Free download, ya’ll

Band name:

Blobs shame hedder

Date & location formed:
2014, Buffalo NY. The lineup really solidified just before New Year’s Day, 2015.

Reason for forming:
It was out of revenge. It was a long con to annoy our enemies– one in particular, the singer of our previous band. Since then, I think we’ve been lucky in that our band now seems to annoy all of our enemies.

What are your lyrics about?
Anxiety, deep senses of shame and self-loathing, contempt for the petty and gruesome behavior of humanity in general.

How would you describe your sound?
Our favorite bands are Geza X, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and The Village People. We really want to live up to how weird things were in LA in the late 70s. We’re a hardcore band, sure, but keys, sax, vibraslap, weird bubble noises, and jaw harps are totally in our wheelhouse.

What’s in the future for this band?
Ritual suicide.

Band name:
Travolta LOGO

Date & location formed:
January 2015, Belgium. In March 2015 Nico (voice) joined in as the last TRAVØLTA member.

Reason for forming:
Niels his old band (ONCE GODLIKE) broke up already a couple of years ago and felled he has to do something again to get rid off of his frustrations. He teamed up with some friends and start jamming as loud, aggressive and fast as possible. Nico who was playing bass since ages (KINGTERROR, VUUR, xOUTRAGEx) told Niels a couple of years ago he wanna sing in a band again… and it seems Niels didn’t forget this conversation.
The line up is:

Niels – Guitar, Kevin – Bass, Rik – Drums & Nico – Vocals

What are your lyrics about?
We consider ourselves a political HC/Punk band so… Not only lyric-wise, but also outspoken on stage. Our lyrics vary from plain simple messages to some stuff to make people think. Or make people tell their friends we are a bunch of sarcastic nagging bastards. Ha ha, lovin’ it!!!!

How would you describe your sound?
Somewhere in between Power Violence, D-Beat and Hardcore. SHORT * FAST * LOUD

What’s in the future for this band?
We recorded 10 songs that will be released by various labels (D.I.Y. or DIE) as a split 10” with our friends from DAYS OF DESOLATION. On the moment we already have 7 new songs, so we gonna record again at the beginning of 2016 for a new split with… (still lookin’ out for the exact partner). And playing live as much as we can, and of course kickin’ people in the butt.

Reissue of the Week: MERCENÁRIAS Demo 1983 LP

October 8th, 2015 by

MERCENÁRIAS – “Demo 1983” EP
There is probably no band like MERCENÁRIAS. This 3/4 femme Brazilian band, better known for their late ’80s post-punk repertoire, made an extraordinary first recording that seems out of time and place. Totally weird, awesome, and fierce: peculiar gruff vocals that predate grindcore layered over angular choppy rhythms making it sound like someone took a chainsaw to the rock song and assembled the hacked up pieces back together with lots of sharp edges sticking out all over the place. They were definitely ahead of their time with irreverent and unapologetic lyrics taking a shit all over patriarchy and scandalizing audiences (the song “Honra” never made it onto their recordings until now). The story in the booklet of sending a talent scout running after hearing one of their songs reminds me of the philosophy of Spain’s VULPESS, active around the same time, who got a TV program shut down in Spain for performing a song called “I Like Being a Slut.” Nice packaging with a semi-bilingual booklet in English and Portuguese containing old flyers, pictures, and lyrics. This is an important piece of Brazilian punk history and crucial international punk artifact with a renewed relevance in 2015. (Lena T)

Record of the Week: DAN MELCHIOR’S BROKE REVIEW Lords Of The Manor EP

October 7th, 2015 by

DAN MELCHIOR’S BROKE REVIEW – “Lords Of The Manor” LP
The welcome return of DAN MELCHIOR’S BROKE REVUE after a ten-year hiatus (although Melchior himself has been anything but idle, cranking out scores of releases in the meantime). This new one reflects a slight change in tone since Dan relocated permanently to the USA. Musically loose and sprawling (only seven tracks spread out over the two sides of this album), vocally deadpan and sardonic. Instrumentation and arrangements are still pretty bare-bones: the rhythm section and keyboards lock into a repetitive groove while the guitar skitters, wails, and scratches over the top. If they discovered Neolithic standing stones on the outskirts of the Medway towns this HAWKWIND meets HEADCOATS sound would be perfect for the first solstice party. (Allen McNaughton)
