Record of the Week: La Misma

November 6th, 2015 by

LA MISMA – “Kanizadi” LP
This is so perfect just go buy it now—just do it! LA MISMA from New York are a force to be reckoned with and, after just one 7” and a few demos, this ferocious full-length hurtles through the punk universe like a blazing comet! I can’t single out one song on this record because the consistency and character—the bite!—is found in every song. Each jam packed with pogo power, this is short and fast, heavy and solid, structured but crumbling under the intensity of the execution. A commendable homage to the CRISIS guitar sound, fueled by UK82 punk power and laced with the venom of ’80s Italian punk, but never limited or overshadowed by those influences. The guitar mixes creeping hooks and solos with frontal-attack riffs. The hypnotic bass booms and rumbles with the power of a coming earthquake. The stomping, cymbal-crashing drums are crude and commandeering like a primeval instinct. The vocalist spits, squeals and yelps, all passionate Portuguese delivery and transfixing impressionistic lyrical content. The result is spine-chilling, catchy and driving all at the same time. The production works around the core sound like a Rubik’s cube doing every element justice—the twisting guitar distortion, the bristle and weight of the bass, the dissonance in the vocals, the pitch and punch in the drums. 18 minutes and 53 seconds of white-knuckled, jaw-clenching, hair-raising energy that has my mind and body positively ecstatic. Comes with a 28-page booklet and A2 poster designed by the vocalist. For fans of: good fucking music! Exceptional! (Lydia A)

New Blood! BEAST, PALE RED, and BROKEN WINDOWS

November 5th, 2015 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
BEAST

BEAST Logo

Date & location formed:
April 2015 in the Bay Area.

Reason for forming:
Three of us worked together at a craft store and all happened to be in a rare period between bands, so we decided to start one ourselves. Also, Di had never sang in a band before and wanted an opportunity to do so.

What are your lyrics about?
We have a song about dealing with PTSD related panic attacks, and a song about street harassment, and a song about dead cops. Our lyrics are mostly about stigma, survival, and fighting to create a little space to get by in this fucked society.

How would you describe your sound?
Post-Wave. Dark but melodic post-punk. Something like that.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have a demo / EP coming out this winter and plan to keep writing more songs and hope to have a tour and a full length in the works by next fall.

Bandcamp is in the works. Stay tuned:

Band name:
PALE RED (aka pail read, pal rad, paul rudd)

Date & location formed:
Jan 1, 2014 in East Van.

Reason for forming:
We all wanted to spend a lot more time hanging out in a tiny room together. sick jams, tax breaks, resume building.

What are your lyrics about?
How time is a blob.

Pale Red (photo by Cody Turple)

Pale Red (photo by Cody Turple)

How would you describe your sound?
noisy and blob-like, fuzzy/freaky and manic, stuff parents don’t like, hit classics.

What’s in the future for this band?
Time’s a blob – the future radiates from the same complex, non-linear centre as the present and past. I don’t understand the question. Oh shit, and we have a big album (produced by Evan Matthiesen) coming out in a couple months!

Broken Windows (photo by Casey Huizenga )

Band name:
BROKEN WINDOWS

Date & location formed:
April 2015, in a front lawn in Orlando, Florida while on tour with Black Monuments & Shitty Nights.

Reason for forming:
Our drummer in former band Shitty Nights quit right before we were leaving for tour with Black Monuments, so Mike filled in for that time. Halfway through the tour we asked him to make it a permanent thing, and decided it was a good opportunity to take things in a different direction- faster and nastier, but also more serious, with a greater sense
of urgency.

What are your lyrics about?
Anxiety, depression, feeling crazy, being let down by other people and yourself.

How would you describe your sound?
Straight forward, loud, fast punk. It’s all about the attack.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have a split 7″ coming out mid-November with Warrior Tribes from Chicago. More recording, and hopefully a tour in the spring (and many more!).

Maximum Rocknroll #391 December 2015

It’s time for Maximum Rocknroll #391, the December 2015 issue of punk’s longest continuously running fanzine! This one is loaded. In these pages you will find what may be the most in-depth correspondence with the MINNEAPOLIS URANIUM CLUB BAND you’ll find anywhere—their parent company and attorneys are notoriously cagey, so read here for more on this Midwestern rock group, their origins, and their sponsors. We’ve also got interviews with Finnish hardcore lifers SA-INT, Alabama antagonist GARY WRONG, the minds behind the radical and labyrinthine Texas hardcore of SIN MOTIVO, the jagged noiseniks of Oakland’s MANSION, and outsider San Francisco hardcore punks TSA. There’s even more! For our first ever interview with any Cuban band in these pages we sat down with ADICTOX and ARRABIO during their Canadian tour, and capping it all off is an incredible interview with Zoë Dodd, Toronto harm reduction worker, activist, and punk. Also included: a scene report from Andalusia as well as photo spreads from Not Dead Yet 2015 and All Punks Go For It, a raw punk rager in the heart of California’s Central Valley. All your favorite columnists are here too, along with punk’s most comprehensive and unsparing reviews section.
