New Blood! SYNDICATE, BLACK ABBA, and APES BRIGADE

December 10th, 2015 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
SYNDICATE

Date & location formed:
We played our first show in October of 2014 in Oakland, California.

Reason for forming:
Producing something meaningful with friends, sharing it with others, and escaping the drudgery.

What are your lyrics about?
Repression, disenchantment, lack of alternatives. Identifying these ills in hopes of somehow moving forward.

unnamed-1

Syndicate (photo by Niki Pretti)

How would you describe your sound?
Proto-post-punk. It’s not so much an intentional oxymoron as an admission that we want to sound like all and none of those things all at once.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are recording new material soon and will have a West Coast tour in the works for spring or summer of 2016.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
BLACK ABBA

Date & location formed:
We haven’t really been on top of our record keeping. Sometime in the past few years, in the South.

Reason for forming:
Anti-entropy.

Black Abba (photo by Alison Green)

Black Abba (photo by Alison Green)

What are your lyrics about?
The wonders of mail delivery service, dogs, board games, life insurance other regular shit.

How would you describe your sound?
We sound like 12 year old high-schoolers playing RUSH covers in a basement.

What’s in the future for this band?
Being 13. And, entropy. We also have a 7″ out on Goner and a tape out on Holotrash!

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
APES BRIGADE L:APES BRIGADEGRAPHIQUESBadge Présentation1 (1)

Date & location formed:
Marseille, spring 2015.

Reason for forming:
Previous band broke up, and still wanting some noise and action, need to play and scream and make songs, need of energy and to express our anger and frustrations and share positive energy.

What are your lyrics about?
Political or intimate lyrics about life, real world, what makes us sad or angry, songs against stupid sexist/racist/specist/homophobes, against police , against drug abuse wasting life of gifted friends, or about dead peoples that we are missing, about classwar, against austerity, against video monitoring…

How would you describe your sound?
Short songs, raw sound, a blend of post-punk and hardcore-punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
Apes Brigade line up changed since the recording of the demo, synth player and guitarist left the band. We have now a new guitarist and a new synth player. We are making new songs, we will record a new demo soon ( or maybe a EP or LP, if some label is interested, because we are squatters or working class punks so we are skint),and play as much and as far as we can.

New Blood! BUTANNA, BIG BLEACH, and NUEVA FUERZA

December 3rd, 2015 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
BUTANNA

Date & location formed:
Oakland, 2014 (latest formation). ButannaLogo

Reason for forming:
Uh, fate? …. or…err…. to challenge what is means to be punk/pry open a spot for those who have to work harder to have their voices heard.

What are your lyrics about?
The strength and power of our communities; challenging societal assumptions around love, life, identity and power; and, fucking up any macho-shit that gets in the way of all that. we sing from our hearts — in a way that incorporates the pain, joy, desperation, rage, elation and isolation that comes with catching
only glimpses of a world where
everyone is given a shit about.

How would you describe your sound?
Straight-up punk with a riotglam/queerdo rage sparkle that destroys. we’re influenced by lots of music such as the plasmatics, lydia lunch, the continuum of east bay punk, erase errata, blood robots, ny dolls, damned, stooges, death, the early detroit pre-punk scene, anti-corpos and that basement show band who played once and then broke up.

What’s in the future for this band?
First: weird-butch-femme-sex-love, paying rent and tripping up shit-eating, gentrifying techies in the bay. second: continuing to hock our 7-song demotape (released summer 2015), releasing a LP (soon!) and touring US/Canada this Spring/Summer (let us know if we can sleep on your floor and pet your punk dogs).
third: our next shows are on Dec 5th at the Octopus Literary Salon in Oakland and Jan 22nd at El Rio in San Francisco (it’s a benefit for transprisoners and TGIJP — Transgender Identified Justice Project)

Band name:
BIG BLEACH big bleach button

Date & location formed:
The Bleach Gang first appeared on March 23, 2015, at the Porn Hall in Hattiesburg, MS. We formed shortly before that show.

Reason for forming:
Most of us are in another band together but wanted to play different instruments and a different style. We wanted to form a band that was more upbeat and groovy.

What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics are all about goofy shit like beavas, drinking bleach, and biker love. We have one song that talks trash on rednecks who fly confederate flags. We’ve got a few songs about pleasure leather, too.

Bug Bleach

Big Bleach

How would you describe your sound?
One of our friends said we sounded like we were “bonged out”. We just play fast punk stuff.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re going on a 10 day tour in January 2016 to spread the beava luv and have a couple tapes and a hopeful 7 inch in the works. The Bleach Army marches on.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
NUEVA FUERZA

Date & location formed:
July 2015, Barcelona, Spain.

Reason for forming:
The scene of Spain is getting older, there aren’t new bands made by young people, and we are the youngest ones at most of the shows, which is so sad. We’re trying to attract more people to this little world, but we need more good bands that don’t all sound and look the same. So we decided to start to change that and Xavi and I (David) (both from Anarquía Vertical) started to practice this past summer to prepare Nueva Fuerza.

What are your lyrics about?
I write about many different things, but it all could be summed up as the vision of an angry kid disappointed about the present, who wants the youth of Spain to be all united, showing the world that we can do something interesting too.

How would you describe your sound?
We can’t define our sound by throwing around a couple of band or scene names, because we just did whatever we wanted for this first EP. It’s 80s hardcore, and some people might say that it sounds like a mix of Boston bands (like DYS and Last Rights) with late 80s NYHC, sung in Spanish.

What’s in the future for this band?
We want to tour Spain. We want to record more and better songs. And we want to release this first EP on a label, but we don’t have many contacts to do that yet, so we will just try to do it.

Maximum Rocknroll #392 • Jan 2016

mrr_392_cvr

Get ready for Maximum Rocknroll #392! It’s the January 2016 issue, and we’re starting off the new year with style: Philadelphia’s BLANK SPELL riff on their irreplicable and twisted brand of hardcore and contemplate punk worldwide, and Mitch Cardwell lands an interview with ANDY HUMAN, who dishes on survival skills in the Bay Area reptoid reality. On top of that, Julaya from G.L.O.S.S. wrote an epic of a tour diary spanning the Olympia hardcore band’s six week cross-continental voyage this Fall. We also got an interview with Detroit label Salinas Records on their relationship with the city and punk integrity; a complete history of Toronto’s short-lived yet impactful DIY venue S.H.I.B.G.B.’s; East Anglian hardcore totems VOLUNTEERS; TEX FOX, a hardcore punk provocateur out of Beirut, Lebanon; and a profile of ROOM 101, New Orleans’ busiest one-man band. Oh, let’s not forget: an announcement of our Still Not Quiet on the Western Front fest (February 11-14, save the date!), photo spreads from London’s Static Shock Weekend and the Collective Delusion/Mass Hysteria exhibition in Austin, another round of contributions from your favorite and most hated columnists alike, and an exceptionally loaded reviews section (in which many of this year’s best records are covered). Pick this one up, it’s a must read.
