“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:image
SIRENA VICTIMA

Date & location formed:
December 2014, San Francisco

Reason for forming:
Our three separate bands played at elbo room on the night the Giants won the 2014 World Series and we all saw how awesome the other was. We hung out and realized we could all be in one band together.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics vary from women’s issues, language barriers, romantic trouble, people in San Francisco, and random funny stuff.

How would you describe your sound?
San Francisco fog rock with a little grage pop.

What’s in the future for this band?
We just finished recording our second album and can’t wait to put it out on tape, it is going to sound really good.

Band name:
DREAM WHIP

Date & location formed:
December 2014 / Calgary, AB

Reason for forming:
We were all really inspired by various girl groups, ranging from the 60s to now and wanted to do something of our own. It’s really been about creating our own opportunities to have fun, say what we want to say, and support each other to make the music we like.

What are your lyrics about?
Eating chips, romance, misogyny, going to the beach, being lazy, hating the music your boyfriend likes, breking all your teeth.

How would you describe your sound?
We have a lot of different influences, but when we get together, what comes out is something between pop, punk, and power pop.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re releasing a music video and album this spring (2016), playing shows and house parties, and probably a mini tour this summer.

Band name:

#squadlife

Date & location formed:
Born on the edge of a lightening bolt in the Bay Area Babylon tech reign era.

Reason for forming:
Magic Lord and The Bovver Boys exists. War on the terraces of Mission Park (dropbox stomp).

What are your lyrics about?
Sinead O’Connor, The Proto-Working class // from slavery to empire.

How would you describe your sound?
Kind of a cross between Soul Train and the Old Testament. JK. Actually, musically – like ANDREW WK meets STARS AND STRIPES.

What’s in the future for this band?
Lifting weights, eating protein, and hot tubs w/ cigars… i.e. the struggle.

New Blood! CONMAN, MILD SHAG, and EX-DEBS

February 4th, 2016 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
CONMAN

Date & location formed:
December 2015 in Toronto, ON.

conman 1

Conman (photo by Alex Kress)

Reason for forming:
Members of GRIN were looking to do something after parting ways with that band. We got together and jammed with some new peeps.

What are your lyrics about?
Scheming in the streets, lowkey being Spider-Man, and never waking up.

How would you describe your sound?
Hardcore punk that is not boring and feels good to play.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are currently writing music for a 7″ and hoping to tour this year.

Band name:
MILD SHAG

Date & location formed:
Earlyish 2015, Singapore.

Reason for forming:
There’s pretty much nothing else better to do in capitalist state Singapore, other than work and punk. Besides, none of us has ever played together in any other bands so we thought it’d be cool to try it out.

What are your lyrics about?
Everything that we’ve experienced/observed first hand in Singapore’s society…from the crazy lack of work/life balance and the unfortunate elderly folks who still have to slave just to put dinner on the table, to the systematic fascist/authoritarian bullshit in almost every aspect of the Singaporean life.

Mildshag Photo (MRR)

How would you describe your sound?
In the words of Robert Collins, “knuckledragging Oi! influenced hardcore” (you know…that stomping hardcore punk sorta thing).

What’s in the future for this band?
Couple of EPs and hopefully tour in and out of South East Asia.

Links and contact info:

mildshag.bandcamp.com

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
EX-DEBS

Date & location formed:
New Years Day 2016 / Portland, Oregon.

11722657_10153485366943430_6857412416884708868_o

Reason for forming:
The last 2 bands I was in, I was just screaming and yelling about shit, I wanted to sing and make something melodic. Also, wanted to do something outside the realm of “serious music” (read: weird punk) without being party-time-fonzie-music.

What are your lyrics about?
Feeling alienated in the world at large & in the world of punk. Letting your politics and ideals seep thru the sounds rather than just yelling them at people.
Being cool with yourself and your neighbors.

How would you describe your sound?
Organ, Drums and Singing with live dub effects mixing. Lo-fi tunes made by punks. Looking back, but trying to avoid the nostalgia petting zoo.

What’s in the future for this band?
DIY shows on the west coast and beyond.

Maximum Rocknroll #394 • Mar 2016

mrr_394_cvr

Here comes Maximum Rocknroll #394, the March 2016 issue! This issue features a massive bilingual interview with Korea’s noizepunks SCUMRAID in advance of their sure-to-be devastating visit to the US this Spring. Former MRR coordinator Golnar Nikpour got a chance to sit down with Hannah Lew of San Francisco’s COLD BEAT to discuss their new record, Hannah’s label Crime on the Moon, and how to navigate nostalgia and capitalism as a band on the fringes of punk and pop. Scotland’s CLOCKED OUT talk about their influences in Clevo HC and the current state of Glaswegian hardcore, and the LANDLORDS (“true hardcore weirdos” of mid-80s Charlottesville, Virginia) discuss their history and their long-lost second LP.

Also: CONSTANT INSULT offer up a Minneapolis punk basement tour and a Minnesota punk ethnography; Helsinki hardcore band DARFÜR talk about Finnish DIY projects; a trip down the psych-punk wormhole with Buffalo’s UTAH JAZZ; a scene report from the United Arab Emirates; and a photo spread from January’s This Is Austin, Not That Great fest. Of course this all comes with a massive reviews section and all your favorite columnists—in this issue, Not Normal Tapes impresario (and singer in Chicago HC outfit The Bug) Ralph Rivera contributes a brand new music column to the MRR “PC Hate Vision.” This issue also introduces new content co-coordinator Brendan Wells, who just moved in from Minneapolis to help run the very magazine you hold in your hands each and every month. What a time to be alive.
