“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
DRUJ

Date & location formed:
Fall 2016.

Reason for forming:
Our bassist Ross was wanting to do a dbeat gig, we all really liked the idea so we jumped on board and got together. We all share a lot of the same views on ideas involving music, so we moved swiftly with writing out first demo.

What are your lyrics about?
War, torture, psychosis, loss, creeps.

How would you describe your sound?
Pulling a small brown pissed off locust’s wings off.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have an east coast tour in the works with our friends in Crutch, mid April or so. We’re stoked.

Band name:
PREENING

Date & location formed:
Oakland, CA. May 2016.

Reason for forming:
Sam: If I remember right, Max and I talked about playing music together three or four years ago when I worked at a record store. I think he was attracted to my homemade DNA shirt. I was attracted to the uninhibited, madcap spirit of his music-making. I still am. It took a while, but when we revisited the idea, he pitched bringing in Alejandra, who was kind enough to agree to join. The sense of spontaneity and possibility, along with the naturally egalitarian atmosphere of practices, feels energizing.

Alejandra: Someone found out I could play a bass on a Saturday and told Max, who then hit me up two days later asking if I wanted to play some time. I was flattered and jumped at the opportunity. Didn’t know Sam was involved in the project initially but was psyched when I heard.

What are your lyrics about?
Sam: One song began as a paean to my PO Box, an old brass one with masonic-looking engravings in Berkeley, and morphed into something unrecognizable. Another one is about the collapse of digital news organizations in the wake of an event such as a solar flare, which would cripple the internet. Some of them have been collaborative, written jointly in as little as fifteen minutes.

Max: Body horror, classism, the privilege of self censorship, Giorgio Di Chirico, the temporal nature of art, mercy/grace in the natural world.

Alejandra: Distorted(?) perceptions of the world around you, communication, misinformation, the perfect double taper.

How would you describe your sound?
Alejandra: Give it a listen and make up your own mind.

Sam: For shorthand, I tend to tell people it sounds “pretty busted,” which might seem negative but to me captures the skronk and abrasion, negative space and hardscrabble grooves.

Max: Herky jerky, caddywhompus, asymmetrical punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
Alejandra: In the near future -getting our demo out and going on tour. In general -creative and personal growth. To share and facilitate experiences with strangers and friends through our music, and hopefully have fun while doing it.

Sam: We’re recording a demo on a handheld tape recorder, which a small label is interested in pressing in a tiny edition. And then we’ll tour up to Olympia, Washington to record more of a proper title. Also, abstaining as a band from Facebook, Bandcamp, and the like (though we do intend to hand-code our own website instead).

Max: Record, tour, write. Use Punk to expand our vision. Make friends and be allies. Challenge ourselves to mine the grist of inspiration without slumping to puerile regurgitation. Provide free access to our music and band info without relying on proxies.

Reason for forming:
To party and make new friends and annoy my bandmates on tour with my collection of U2 CDs.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are about how I feel about the world and things and people around me.

How would you describe your sound?
Very rude very sexy and very loud.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are officially releasing the demo on March 1st on Bandcamp and we will have physical copies of it on tape as well by then and we have a small run in April headed to Fresno, L.A and San Diego.

Band name:

SNAKE CHURCH

Date & location formed:
June 2015, Birmingham, AL.

Reason for forming:
I had Big Zit and Tenement booked at my house and I just really wanted to play with those bands.

What are your lyrics about?
Loving drugs, hating God and government.

How would you describe your sound?
Eli blatantly tries to rip off CCR, Liam’s favorite band is My Chemical Romance, Eliot got into butt rock as a joke but accidentally started liking it and BJ exclusively listens to Devo so…

What’s in the future for this band?
Lots of shows here in Birmingham,
we’ve got several new songs to record, there’s talk of a music video, were planning a little tour with Liam’s other band, Backyard Camping, and a trip down to Rotten Fest in Tallahassee with Eli’s other band, Bad Example. Other than that, we’re just gonna keep on chooglin’.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
DARK WEB

Date & location formed:
We formed in Philly in the summer of 2016 after me (Sims Hardin) and RJ Gilligan started recording some demos at his house. We didn’t have a drummer at the time, so I played drums first on the recordings, then we would lay down the rest of the music which was something we had to learn how to do successfully, but it worked out.

Reason for forming:
We just formed because we were bored and wanted to do something new. Rj and I liked the way each other played. I wanted to take some hooky Ramones sounding bullshit and have Rj play some crazy solos and riffs over it. It was a bedroom project that turned out well and we formed a band. That was pretty much it.

What are your lyrics about?
Dark Web’s lyrical content narrates tragic characters and violent wasteland cityscapes affected by pollution, alien invasion, government conspiracy, defective artificial intelligence, and severe mental health issues.

How would you describe your sound?
Our music has been described as stompy sewer-punk characterized by driving drums, heavy squealing guitars, and guttural nihilistic vocals.

What’s in the future for this band?
We would like to do another EP early this year, and maybe put a full LP out by the end of the year. I’m aiming to do some shorter tours in the Late summer and Fall.

Band name:
YUPS

Date & location formed:
July 4th, 2016. San Francisco.

Reason for forming:
Too much gross hardcore music in the scene.

What are your lyrics about?
Just livin’ the life of an average joe from the 70s.

How would you describe your sound?
Rock, and roll.

What’s in the future for this band?
The 80’s & 90’s.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
CLAN DOS MORTOS CICATRIZ

Date & location formed:
Curitiba/Paraná, Brazil.

Reason for forming:
I was around 15 y.o. when I decided to record some noise stuff using the moniker of Clan dos Mortos Cicatriz, for no specific reason. I decided to leave Cãos, got bored of my other bands, and still had some bass riffs composed, so I invited Okuyama-san to help me record and eventually join the band.

What are your lyrics about?
About no longer being human and/or failing while being human. Mostly of it is inspired by the eroguro-nonsense literary movement and authors like Osamu Dazai and Junichiro Tanizaki.

How would you describe your sound?
Maybe blackened post-punk? Not sure.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re already recording new stuff, it’s gonna be called “TOGAWA EP” and it will be a punk hommage to the japanese new wave singer Jun Togawa and her band, Yapoos.

Band name:
HVAC

Date & location formed:
Spring 2016 in New York.

Reason for forming:
As a personal antidote to this bullshit system (or put more eloquently by bell hooks) the “imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy” that we’re living in and that sometimes insidiously creeps into the communities that we forge as an alternative to that.

What are your lyrics about?
Anjelica: Revenge as freedom from abuse, some of the things going on around us in punk that suck.

Sarah: The struggles of being taken seriously as a non-male; knowing that you deserve better than what you’re getting from your environment and then being expected to maintain a pleasant demeanor in the harsh and grating reality of being a femme.

How would you describe your sound?
Brat punk you can stomp to.

What’s in the future for this band?
Tours and a 7 in!

What are your lyrics about?
True crime, mental struggle, Daniel’s haunting perspective of the world through the eyes of a serial killer.

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe our sound with rock n roll influences. Other people have said that we “sound like” G A G, so we went with it, which is we made shirts with ball gags on them. :)

New Blood! BAD EXAMPLE, HAIRSPRAY QUEEN, CRUMBLING WALL, FEX URBIS, and GULAG

February 2nd, 2017 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
BAD EXAMPLE

Date & location formed:
February 2016, formed in Benji’s hut in Birmingham AL.

Reason for forming:
Ariel wrote a recorded a bunch of instrumental songs by himself, and would ask his roommates Rickey and Sammantha to yell vocals into his computer mic to record vocals. At the time myself (Eli) and Benji had a drum set at our house. Since then our influence is ignoring responsibilities and buddies.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are mostly about fucked up people and how to deal with fucked up people.

How would you describe your sound?
Pogo hardcore for tuffys.

What’s in the future for this band?
A lot more songs, a lot more tours, and inevitable financial ruin.

Links and contact info:

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
HAIRSPRAY QUEEN

Date & location formed:
Providence, RI, March 2016.

Reason for forming:
A few of us had been loosely jamming since late 2015. After a few months of that, Joey from Downtown Boys offered us our first show, and we wrote most of our set in the 4 weeks leading up to it. Our singer joined a few days before the show and we’ve been going like that since.

What are your lyrics about?
Dying and how shitty the world is.

How would you describe your sound?
Punk, deathrock, “dark punk.”

What’s in the future for this band?
Release more music and play more shows. We’re hopefully touring through the midwest and east coast this summer but we don’t know anyone to book shows farther than like, Boston.

Band name:

CRUMBLING WALL

Date & location formed:
September 2016, South London.

Reason for forming:
The two of us play together in a band called SARCASM, and found ourselves in our practice room one evening without the other half of that group. Casting around for something to do, and both fresh from 190 episodes of Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast, the most sensible conclusion seemed to be to start another band, in which we both play unfamiliar instruments for the first time, entirely themed around Ancient Rome. By the end of the evening, we had decided to give ourselves two months to write, record and release a tape; and play a show. We (just) succeeded.

What are your lyrics about?
Roman History. The first tape is about the emperors of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty, aka ‘the five good emperors’. There might be contemporary resonances, but we try to stick close to the source material.

How would you describe your sound?
Primitive. Blindly feeling our way towards the kind of punk we want to hear, liberated by a total lack of technical ability. CRASS, RONDOS and ILDJARN were vaguely mentioned as initial ‘influences.’

What’s in the future for this band?
More of the past. Hopefully another tape before the summer.

Links and contact info:
crumblingwall.bandcamp.com

Band name:
FEX URBIS

Date & location formed:
Formed late 2015, played our first show in March ’16 and released our demo in September. London, UK.

Reason for forming:
All of our old bands (NO, VERTICAL SLUMP, COP, GLOSS REJECTION) died; we’re all from different towns called ‘Tombland.’

What are your lyrics about?
Addictions & dying.

How would you describe your sound?
Throbbing memento mori anarcho punk made by dum dum boys with the dynamism of a dog on a leash.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re partway through recording the next 6 songs we wrote after our first demo, hoping to play out of London as much as possible asap.

WW1/2 and Cold War Conspiracies, Hating Life.

How would you describe your sound?
Angry, Raw, “Fast” 80’s Scandinavian Influenced Hardcore.

What’s in the future for this band?
Release a few tapes,eps, lp,go on a few tours.

Band name:
RAT CAGE

Date & location formed:
Rat Cage was born in my brain around August 2016. The Demo was formed in one afternoon that month at The Lughole in Sheffield while I was skiving work.

Reason for forming:
A couple of my other bands were dormant/dying. I had ideas for riffs polluting my head that I had to get onto tape. I also had been wanting the challenge of doing a one man project for a while, so this was the perfect opportunity.

What are your lyrics about?
My songs are about all the fucked up shit that’s going on right now. And there’s a hell of a lot of it.

How would you describe your sound?
There’s no denying my obsession with Totalitär and Swedish hardcore comes through strong in this band. But singing with a British accent gives it a UK82 edge aswell I guess. Disarm meets Partisans has been mentioned.

What’s in the future for this band?
Caged Like Rats 7″ due for release on La Vida Es Un Mus in February.
Also, the possibility of a full band live show at Noise Annoys Festival this July in Sheffield is on the cards.

We liked each other and wanted to be in a band. Ricky and Elsa found each other on Craigslist, Nora got recruited at Scream Queens.

Our lyrics are about trauma, transmisogyny, being pissed off about how fucked up the world is, and the X-Men.

How would you describe your sound?
Dissonant noise from space faggots.

What’s in the future for this band?
A lot of new songs, another album this year, elsa playing guitar, and tours! We are going to the pacific northwest (Corvallis, Seattle, Olympia, Portland) this March w Late Bloom, from San Francisco, stay tuned for dates.

COLD LEATHER

Date & location formed:
Summer 2016, Berlin.

Reason for forming:
The obvious shortage of leather-themed band names.

What are your lyrics about?
The shitty life… and the good life.

As if late 1970s L.A. was actually located in the early 80s UK, and everyone was also really into decent classic rock.

Reason for forming:
Haircut existed with some other lineups starting in late 2015, and we finally got a solid crew together in summer 2016. A few of us moved into a show space in Charlottesville around the same time, so that worked out pretty nicely as far as being able to practice and play shows regularly.

What are your lyrics about?
Consent, being Latin American, grief, femininity.

How would you describe your sound?
We were really diggin on the classics when we started putting it together. X, Fang and Black Flag come to mind.

Band name:

THE LEASH

Date & location formed:
Sometime early 2015 we formed as Gutter. Got a new drummer (Phill Gonzalez), wrote new songs, and released material as The Leash late 2016. Austin, TX.

Reason for forming:
To show the world the fucking boys are back in town.

What are your lyrics about?
Embarrassment, trust issues, addiction, depression, guilt, psychedelics, nihilism, disillusionment. Maybe a song or two about social or political issues, but that typically does not align with the ways of the collar, the leash, and the bond between the two.

How would you describe your sound?
Soggy meets Poison Idea? Recently gravitating more towards a faster and more straight forward sound for our next release.

What’s in the future for this band?
Spread the gospel of the trinity: the leash, the collar, and the bond between the two.

Band name:

THE SURGE

How would you describe your sound?
I guess early 80’s punk. Fun fast stuff.

We’re on tour right now with CoolSide from SoCal so definitely more touring in the future. Also releasing new stuff in 2017.
