Band name:
PRETTY

Date & location formed:
December 2016/Boston, MA.

Reason for forming:
Most of my creative output is centered around recording and drumming, so I wanted to start a solo project where I could play badly play some riffs and yell a lot; I’m constantly inspired by a ton of talented friends and a lot of it rubs off on me whenever I pick up a guitar and noodle!

What are your lyrics about?
Queerness, embracing identity, and toxic complacency.

How would you describe your sound?
Fairly rockin’~

What’s in the future for this band?
Writing new material and playing some shows with my buds! I’m moving to NYC soon, so hopefully gigging with some of the fantastic bands in the area!

How would you describe your sound?
We’re a d-beat raw punk band with a lot of Swedish punk influences.

What’s in the future for this band?

Band name:
LÖSS

Late summer of 2016. Gothenburg, Sweden.

Three of us played together in another band that was on hiatus at the moment and so we got restless, switched some instruments and started a new band together with Clara.

What are your lyrics about?
First world problems, slaves to new trends, void, having Jesus as your only friend, morons who walk in the bicycle lane, greed, bs…

How would you describe your sound?
Raw & catchy.

Band name:
DECOY

Date & location formed:
FALL 2015 IN A STORAGE UNIT IN GREENSBORO NORTH CAROLINA BUT MORE LEGITIMATELY EARLY 2016 IN THE FANTASY ULTRA LOUNGE.

Reason for forming:
To rock as hard as possible, and because 90% of punk bands here are the same 5-6 people switched around.

What are your lyrics about?
Street metal, how Decoy is your favorite band, death, standard stuff.

How would you describe your sound?
Pummeling Street Metal.

What’s in the future for this band?

New Blood! SUB SPACE, CRICO, TOTAL REALITY, OMERTA, and GAG TAPE

March 30th, 2017 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
SUB SPACE

We are:
Vocals- Sam Light
Guitar- Joe Z.
Bass- Martin
Drums- Tony Kaplan

Date & location formed:
March 2016 Brooklyn, NY.

Reason for forming:
I really wanted to start a hardcore project. I had a lot of aggression that was consuming me in an unhealthy way, and music has always been an outlet for me, so I thought why not start making some. Around that time there were so many amazing femme-fronted hardcore bands coming out and KILLING IT! It really inspired me to finally start a project and put myself out there.Me and Joe started the project and then asked Tony and Martin if they wanted to be part of it. We have all known each other for the better part of a decade so everything just kinda fell into place as we began to write. We all put an equal amount of effort and creative energy into the songs, so everything we have written so far has been a real collaborative effort.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics all have interconnecting themes about standing your ground and the constant struggle of internal and external destruction. It’s about raw femme and queer power, about claiming our space, about confronting anger and actually using it as a source of strength. I wanted to write fem-dom lyrics to assert my dominance and make it very present.

I also made the decision to write some of the songs in Spanish. I chose to do that because I am a mix Latina New Yorker. This is a part of me and the lyrics I wrote in Spanish are actually the most personal and vulnerable.

How would you describe your sound?
Sub Space is definitely hc with punk sensibilities. We found a sound that really represents every single one of our personal styles and we are super excited to continue to grow into that sound.

What’s in the future for this band?
As for the future, we are getting ready to put out tapes of our demo and wanna keep playing shows!

Band name:
CRICO

Date & location formed:
Mexico City, November 2016.

Reason for forming:
We wanted to start a Rock’n’Roll band influenced by Garage Punk with a raw Hardcore backbone. We all listen to a lot of different stuff as well as sharing a lot of common interests in music and general. Fun, friendship, punk, and memes.

What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics talk about having fun with our friends, the boredom of everyday life and the satisfaction of emotional and musical self destruction. Dating, relationships, and anecdotes, want to see the city blow to bits, letting your feelings take control disregarding the consequences. We invite people to dance and go nuts, to enjoy the music and just dance.

How would you describe your sound?
Strong and fast. a No-holds-barred invitation to wobble your head, stomp around a have a good time.

What’s in the future for this band?
Tour, make more music and more memes.

Band name:
TOTAL REALITY

Date & location formed:
I don’t know about date, but some time around May or June 2016 in my flatmate’s room while hanging out with our now singer (Thauer), who was visiting the glorious.

Reason for forming:
Thauer was never in a band and really wanted to sing somewhere so I figured why not. We hit up our two mates Basti (Bass) and Marcel (Drums) and then I wrote the Demo in two weeks cause I still had some riffs leftover from a former band that never really went anywhere.

What are your lyrics about?
It’s mostly about personal stuff which in Thauer’s case involves a lot of social anxiety and disdain towards his peers which – living in Berlin – consists of Tumblr warriors living behind a computer screen. I think if he would live somewhere else, he would be less aggravated but since he’s a graphic designer Berlin is kind of his natural habitat.

How would you describe your sound?
Primitive, simple but effective. In terms of bands I’ve ripped off probably Urban Blight, Negative Approach, SSD or something like that.

What’s in the future for this band?
We just toured so it might be a while before that happens again but definitely writing and recording new stuff. Gonna play some weekends and fests here and there, maybe throw in the occasional one off show.

March 23rd, 2017 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
MALA MENTE

Date & location formed:
We formed in Denver, CO around December of 2016.

Reason for forming:
We’re all close friends and we do a lot of different types of work together. As a brown femme in punk, I would rarely ever see other femmes in bands, particularly femmes of color, so I felt a certain representation was missing and I wanted to help fill that void.

What are your lyrics about?
We wanted to talk about issues we feel passionately about.. that may make some feel uncomfortable. Our lyrics touch on racism, certain forms of assault, police brutality, colonization, anti-borders, heartbreak, machismo. Issues that many people, who may not have a platform to speak on these things, can relate to.

How would you describe your sound?
I’ve heard “Heavy, cathartic, sludgy hardcore” someone compared us to Dystopia and I want that person to know they’re wrong.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are playing Book Your Own Fest, a DIY fest in Olympia that centers Womxn/Queer/Trans/Femme/PoC voices in Punk and Hardcore on April 29th & 30th. We just released our self-titled EP. We have tapes and shirts on the way! We live in different parts of the country but we work around the distance.

Band name:
BAD VIBES

Date & location formed:
Cardiff, Wales, April 2016.

Reason for forming:
I made the demo on this knackered Tascam years ago, and then forgot about it. I’d been back in Cardiff a year, and Max from Joanna Gruesome liked the tracks so much he decided he’d start a band with guys from Artefact and Caramel to play them live. I kindly got asked to join.

What are your lyrics about?
Fragility. Dull stuff. Konbini Boys is about two young guys who worked at the 7/11 near my place when I lived in Japan. They were total dudes, and often worked the same shift. One of them went missing for a while. I asked why, and his friend whispered the guy was ‘too heartbroken’ to come to work, which I liked. Bad Vibes the song is about this deli in Glasgow I eventually got fired from. Behind the scenes it was fucking disgusting, and I’m pretty sure it had ties to organised crime.

How would you describe your sound?
Regressive, largely unhelpful.

What’s in the future for this band?
Regret. New demo in May!

Band name:
D-SAGAWA

Date & location formed:
We deformed December 25th 2015, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a cold frosty christmas morning and we met with each other to jam in an old abandonded baby-food factory on the MA/NH line after answering a craigslist ad posted by our bassist Jon a few nights prior. Chills ran down my spine as Larry stroked that first chord. from that moment on, I knew this would become something.

Band name:
TASHME

Date & location formed:
We formed in April 2016 in Toronto, ON, Canada.

Reason for forming:
We’re all friends who have been going to shows and playing in bands for years and I guess we just had the resources and motivation to work on something together. We wanted to do something with a serious tone to it, in terms of lyrical content and stylistically. We named the band after a Japanese internment camp in BC, Canada where one of our member’s grandfather was held during WWII. This was sort of a starting point of what would inform some of our lyrics.

What are your lyrics about?
Different songs cover different topics but some recurring lyrical themes include: the unjust incarceration/detainment of people, dealing with more personal issues like anxiety, exploitation within capitalism, and a little bit of scene politics. Some songs are in Spanish.

How would you describe your sound?
I’m not really sure. We wanted to take influences from 80s Hardcore bands like Jerry’s Kids, YDI, Void and things in that vain. I think we started there and added some breakdowns, more throaty vocals, and a bit of a metallic edge. D-beats.

What’s in the future for this band?
More releases (working on an EP), touring.

What are your lyrics about?
Amy: The lyrics are about having good times, having bad times, being lazy, eating doughnuts, and getting shredded.
Luke: Shit talking, eating shit, dealing with shit, fuckin’ shit…..

How would you describe your sound?
Amy: The musical equivalent of making poor decisions in a good choose your own adventure book.
Luke: We literally don’t give a fuck about anything, so whatever that translates to into your ears.

What’s in the future for this band?
Amy: Not sure, but we’re gonna try our goddamn best.
