Finally…issue #420 (the May 2018 issue) of MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL is here! While yes, we do talk about Marijuana in this issue, there are still a ton of interviews with bands, columns, and more! We start things off with a special tribute to our founder Tim Yohannan to mark the 20th anniversary of his passing, complete with some people’s favorite stories about him. Then we talk with the organizers of the ever-popular Bay Area Girls Rock Camp about their strategies for success during their ten years of operation. We also speak with LITTLE DEBBIE & THE CRUSADERS, one of the many bands formed by Bay Area Girls Rock Camp attendees. Seeking more coverage of domestic acts? Have no fear, we have DARK/LIGHT and DEATH RIDGE BOYS from Portland discussing the power of dreams and leftist politics, respectively, and ALL TORN UP! from NYC reviewing the Serenity Prayer. Want more? We’ve got a sick photo spread from Everything Is Not OK IV. Those seeking international punk coverage should be pleased. We have a long interview with Finland’s KOHTI TUHOA discussing the Helsinki scene and politics, MISS DESTINY from Australia dishes out details about brawling at their shows, and YC-CY discusses quitting before they’re too old. Still not enough for you? We have an interview with Erik Sutch, director of Careful Not To Cry, a new film about abortion access. Well, what are you waiting for? Pick this issue up before you forget what you were doing.
Note: we erroneously credited Chelsey del Castillo for the cover image of LITTLE DEBBIE & THE CRUSADERS. That photograph was taken by Jeffie Freeman. We apologize for our mistake.
We are a contributor-driven publication, which means that we rely on punks like you to fill our pages. This is your magazine! You don’t need an invitation to be a part of what we do.
For review and radio play consideration, send two copies of vinyl or one copy of CD- or cassette-only releases to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. Send us the final version of your record—we do not review digital releases, test presses, or promo CDs. All tapes and CD-Rs are reviewed in the Demos section.
We will review everything that falls within our areas of coverage: independent punk, garage, and hardcore. This means no major labels or labels that are exclusively distributed by major-owned distributors. We reserve the right to reject releases on the basis of content. Music without vocals or drums will not be considered.
Every record that is reviewed is added to our archive, the largest collection of punk records in the world. Please allow two months from your mailing date before following up to ask if we’ve received your submission.
We are always looking for interview, scene report, guest column, and photo submissions. Submission does not guarantee publication. In order to improve the chances of your submission being printed, please read our FAQ.
In addition to records, we also review independently published and produced zines, books, and movies. Please send physical copies to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. If you have a streaming link to your film, or if it is playing in the San Francisco Bay Area, please email the information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We rely on distributors to help us reach punks all over the world. Our distros come in all shapes and sizes, from the large companies that sell to newsstands and chain bookshops to a punk who sets up a box on a table at a show. As long as you know people who are interested in reading MRR you too can successfully distribute the magazine! If you have suggestions for places that we should contact about carrying the magazine, get in touch.
In the US you can order five or more of the same issue of MRR for only $2.49 each plus postage. If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your preferred form of payment. There is a small fee associated with Paypal payments.
Newsstand circulation is available through TNG. Other wholesalers who carry the magazine include Ebullition, Revolver, Small Changes, Media Solutions, and Kent News.
We have access to some of the cheapest international shipping rates offered by the USPS. We ship international packages to distributors once a month—individual issues start at $1.75 each. Shipping costs vary by country.
If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your Paypal email address. We send money requests for payment once a month, prior to shipping.
We encourage international distributors to set up subscription services in their city or country. Splitting the wholesale costs of magazines between a group of friends is much more affordable than ordering subscriptions directly from us.
Advertising with us is a great way to support Maximum Rocknroll and get your project seen by an audience of global punks. We only accept ads from bands, labels, distributors, and publishers that we would cover in our reviews sections. Other types of advertisers we take on a case-by-case basis. We reserve the right to refuse any ad and will refund your fee. New advertisers, please contact us first, before sending an ad or payment.
