Sistema de Entretenimiento Arcade Punk EP

Spain has an undeniably characteristic scene of synth punk and adjacent genres, but SISTEMA DE ENTRETENIMIENTO has always been one of the most instantly recognizable of them all. With their aptly-titled new EP Arcade Punk, they keep the flame going. The classic SISTEMA sound is still there: bright drum machine beats, sharp guitar melodies, signature synth parts, and vocals swimming in reverb…but leaning a bit more towards the gloominess of darkwave, it sounds darker and catchier than ever. Fans of the band will be more than satisfied.

Sistema de Entretenimiento 300 Noches Sin Dormir LP

Spanish goth/post-punk/new wave/pop from the early ’80s that was associated with the Movida Madrileña cultural movement is one of my soft spots. The resurgence of synth/post-punk from Spain in the last few years has been very welcome for me, and this band is one of the top-tier acts pushing this forward. On their second LP, they (more than ever) bring to mind legendary bands like PARALISIS PERMANENTE, if maybe colored with a shade of modern lo-fi punk vibes (so as to not say egg-punk). There’s actually a lot of PARALISIS PERMANENTE in this record to my ears, but a reference point more people can understand would be a snotty, punkier early JOY DIVISION. Either way, this is a great fucking record with an immersive dark vibe, “fuck you” attitude, and a bunch of synths. What’s not to fucking love?

Fantastic synth-heavy, drum machine punk from across the pond (Valencia, Spain). Diverse flavors in each track—well, as diverse as you can get with punk music. The first half of the album sounds like EPOXIES and GRAVY TRAIN!!! with a hint of ’90s Euro house. The rest are a mixture of classic DEVO and what could be described as a modern-day MUMMIES. I know drum machines aren’t for everyone, but I’m a sucker for them. Really adds to the band’s motif, and I don’t think a real drum set would do the music justice. Judging by their YouTube presence, their live shows look fun as all hell. Hopefully we’ll see them stateside soon enough. Lovely record here. Well worth a spin if you’re into melodic dance punk.
