Last Night at the Lusty: Remembering San Francisco’s First Unionized Strip Club Janelle Blarg
Last Night at the Lusty: Remembering San Francisco’s First Unionized Strip Club is a fascinating expose of North Beach’s most notorious haunt. Filled with shocking twists and urban legends (but are they?), Janelle Blarg’s most recent comic also highlights the risks, the racism, and the management’s reluctance to address many of the employee’s workplace concerns. Blarg exposes the ongoing issues that eventually resulted in the dancers forming a union with the SEIU; theirs famously becoming the first strip club in the United States to do so. Last Night is a wonderful read, celebrating the women of the ’90s in a true tale of sticking it to the man while simultaneously making San Francisco history.
