Chrome Skulls The Metal Skull EP

This band out of New Jersey lays down four tracks of nonstop blaring D-beat in the vein of IMPALERS. They kind of sound like if a warhorse ran up to you, busted out some sick metal licks, and then galloped off to annihilation. They also sound like many other bands doing this kind of thing. That being said, this EP is solid as fuck so who cares if they don’t stand out from the pack.

Psychic Void Skeleton Paradise LP

Calling itself “psych-punk,” this record kind of defies genres, pulling from creepy retro-horror, rock’n’roll punk, death rock, and even a little industrial or synthwave. One moment it reminds me of the CRAMPS and seconds later it sounds influenced by RUDIMENTARY PENI. Highlights include a minute-and-a-half intro with a drum machine beat (especially the snare tone) that sounds like NINE INCH NAILS’ “Closer.” The vocalist creates incredible synergy with the layered instrumental tracks when he’s maxing out into a deranged fury like on the track “Alley Dweller.” Could be described as a more slick and less gritty version of BITTER FRUIT, another band that totally defies genres. Definitely recommended.

Sub Space I Walk the Devil 12″

Subspace, the ideal place to be in a BDSM scene where one loses touch with reality, is a tough band name to live up to. Or maybe they’re just mathematicians gone punk? Either way, SUB SPACE (the band) is on fire here, delivering six tracks of hardcore with tinges of garage and a lot of beefy heavy metal guitar. You get songs sung in both English and Spanish, which gives this a little rawer extra punch. They remind me of a heavier CRIMEN at times, and “Redemption” is hands-down my favorite here. I look forward to a sweaty, disorientating live show soon to put me in that special place. Thanks.
