Bay Area degenerates FENTANYL double down on everything that made the first LP so addictive, but the songwriting’s tighter and the weirdness cuts even deeper. Eight tracks of off-kilter hardcore that mashes together the weirdness of UNITED MUTATION, NO TREND, DIE KREUZEN, and SIEGE, with flashes of modern freakiness like SPY and GAG. The guitar lurches instead of chugging as every song throws in some left turn before it overstays its welcome, and the whole thing feels wired and paranoid. At barely twelve minutes, it never wastes a second. Twisted hardcore punk that is actively trying to make everyone in the room uncomfortable, exactly as it should.
