From the Vaults: Ads of ’86

April 17th, 2012 by

We’re still digging through the stacks of old moldy PDFs here at MRR Web HQ… Maximum Rocknroll #36 was another classic issue, with 7Seconds, Slapshot, and Tozibabe, to name but a few of the great interviews therein. But what kept grabbing our attention was the ads, imagining being able mailorder all of this shit when it came out and marveling at long-forgotten demos and zines of yore.

Check out the Pusmort records for $5 ppd. and the “upcoming” Poison Idea Kings of Punk LP! Those Disorder mailorder ads were hand-written every month and they did a huge hand-written catalog that came out pretty regularly as well. Does anyone remember SICK BOY from Nanaimo, BC? Who’s got a copy Twin Falls, Idaho’s No Answers zine? How about a FACTION tour video?

In another 20–30 years will the young punks be doing the same thing with MRR #348? We sure hope so. But for now, let’s take the time machine back to May of 1986. Won’t you?…

Monday Photo Blog: Pete Craven is back!!

April 16th, 2012 by

Aww fuck… Another Monday, another week of work stretches slowly out before you. Now that that snitch of a co-worker is nowhere near, take a few moments to escape the mundane tasks that lie before you and check this fine selection of photosbrought to you by none other than Pete Craven, who you may remember from the Shitty Limits final show photo spread in MRR #344, as well as early appearances in the hallowed halls of the Monday Photo Blog. He’s also responsible for Zonked fanzine.

Send your tour photos, bands that have come through your town, the best of your local bands, etc. to: . Include your name, a link to your website (or flickr, Facebook, or whatever), and the band (or subject), date and location of each photo. Just send your best photos — edit tightly. Three to seven photos is plenty, and it’s best to send pictures of different bands. Please do not send watermarked photos. Please make your photos 72 dpi and about 600–800 pixels at the longest side. Not everything sent in will be posted, and a response is not guaranteed, but we do appreciate all of your contributions. Feel free to submit more than once. Thanks!

Record of the Week: OMEGAS NY Terminator EP

This is how you do it. Sometimes I think one of the hardest things to do in the context of the current punk scene is to be in a good hardcore band that stands the test of time. Not a generic replication of something that happened thirty years ago; that’s easy. I have so many records I had to buy that now when I flip through my 7”s I can’t even remember what the fucking band sounded like. Records that blend into one by bands that were probably fun to be in, whose friends remember the good times, but… five minutes pass and they are gone. When a band like OMEGAS comes along, who are playing a particular genre/style of HC, sure, but who can actually write songs; who bring to mind a certain era of NYHC, yes, but have their own take, their own personality. The vocals are unhinged, the riffs are classic but fucked up. Their LP ruled my turntable last year and I can’t stop listening to this 7” either. Savage, mutant yet straight-ahead, relentless destruction — no pose, just fucking HC for the HC. Get this and the recently reissued New Breed comp and join the cult. (Painkiller Records)
