Smallspeaker 2 One-Chord Bullets 7″

2 One Chord Bullets, the latest dispatch from REGISTRATORS mastermind Hiroshi Otsuki and co., is a potent little slab of punk purity. With one song on each side, this 7” showcases two tunes that are both structured around a single chord in the spirit of ’70s Dutch prodigies IVY GREEN’s ‘I’m Sure We’re Gonna Make It.” It opens with “Beat Beat Beat,” an unstoppable noise attack of the “bet you can’t play it just once” variety, offering a soulful hook entrenched in Hiroshi’s glorious trademark damage. While this A-side is closer in resemblance to the tune that likely helped inspire it, the reverberating ring of “Borderline” on the flip pushes the concept into unique new territory. With its scant press run outfitted in modest stamped sleeves, it’s equal parts elusive artifact and rocking art piece. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands across a copy of this, crank it up and congratulate yourself five times.

Smallspeaker Maximum Noise Overdose EP

Holy shit! This woke me up. Featuring Hiroshi from the legendary REGISTATORS plus a regular all-star lineup, this brings back some blackout memories of the ’90s without being some spit-on-the-lens throwback shit. A perfect combo of glass-shard-picked guitar clang over the best “fuck you,” snot-faced vox I’ve heard in some time. SWANKYS, STITCHES, and GEROS for jerks who need those pesky comparisons. All songs are killers. Piss on your dog.

Smallspeaker This Record Kills All Trend Scums EP

A great new single from Japan’s SMALLSPEAKER. The band features Hiroshi Otsuki of the REGISTRATORS and Masa Seventeen of COCKSCRATCH. Three songs of overblown, trashy garage punk. Dirty, nasty, and cool. “Pop Killer” is my fave, but all the songs are great. The sleeve is screened on an 8” envelope and makes the whole package look really nice. Now I just need to find one of these.
