Portland’s SONNAM works with doom, post-metal and ambient space, giving these six pieces time to unfold. There’s a political weight to the words that makes the title’s promise of release more interesting. “Aguas y Púas” turns the border into a ghost story, while “Hymn of Martyrs” confronts state violence and the machinery of empire. Against that, “This Fragile Body” makes a small, stubborn affirmation of being alive and loved. That movement from collective brutality to bodily vulnerability gives the release something worth sitting with. The closing “Wall of Unforgotten Misdeeds” runs nearly ten minutes, so leave the quick-hardcore expectations at the door. Heathen Fawn’s cassette includes an extended “Liminal Haruspex.” Heavy music with enough room for grief, and enough resolve to imagine getting through it.
