Worst Worry Piece of My Art / Nice Gone 7″
Sparse solo downer punk from Lisa Lynn Wallace, formerly of nouvelle vague garage gang BLACK TIME (where she went by the nom de punk Janie Too Bad) and the noisy/bratty post-Slampt duo SEXAPHONE. Neither of these two songs are worlds away from the less raucous side of BLACK TIME—the Janie-sung “I’m Gonna Haunt You When I’m Gone” from 2008’s Double Negative LP is a solid point of departure; the overall vibe here is definitely more BLACK TAMBOURINE than Black Monk Time. Wallace’s sung/spoken delivery lands somewhat out of phase with the drum machine drone, tambourine rattle, and minimal slashes of post-punk guitar in “Piece of My Art,” not unlike a disoriented and even drowsier version of the twee-psych beat of early SLUMBER PARTY, as “Nice Gone” juxtaposes Wallace’s way-up-front, double-tracked, and increasingly tension-edged vocals against comparatively charged guitar strum and off-kilter cymbal crashes, bringing to mind some hypothetical band that would have played with MECCA NORMAL at a bookstore circa 1992 (not a diss).
