Witch Piss Hot Bog cassette

California’s WITCH PISS truly stunned me with this one. It’s beautifully deranged in the most tasteful way possible. Unhinged vocals on top of sick bass lines, serrated guitar riffs, occasional ear-candy synth parts, and full-throttle drums make for an album that I’m super impressed by and honestly, kind of jealous of. Covering one of the best CURE tracks ever might have had a slight impact on my judgement, but oh well…this thing undeniably rules, and so does its artwork.

Witch Piss Tape 2 cassette

It’s been a relatively long wait since Tape 1 from California’s WITCH PISS, especially considering their penchant for blazing hot and concise punk. I suspect it takes a little more than meets the ear to write tunes this dense and ferocious, though. Borrowing from the tight-but-chaotic bouncing corners of garage punk with throaty vocals laden over like gravel, it’s a winning sound that takes hold of your attention and doesn’t let go. It’s not quite hardcore, but I imagine it commands a room the way hardcore does at its most literate. Plus it’s just a hell of a lot of damn fun, with trebly rumbles of bass, just a kiss of synth, and riffs that will make you pogo like a fool. Just my kind of stuff, like bubblegum in a studded jacket.

Well, this absolutely rules. The tape of the month, for my money! I believe WITCH PISS to be a solo project from Simi Valley, CA. Five songs of completely idiotic, synth-heavy, drum-machine-driven moron music. Subject matter of the songs ranges from painting The Hamburglar as a revolutionary, to the troubles of being Garfield, to transmogrifying oneself into a slug, and all things in between. This tape is super fun and easy to flip and continue listening to, as there is an A-side of the tape as well as an “also A”-side. Unfortunately for all fans of the utterly absurd, the WITCH PISS Bandcamp page informs me that this cassette tape is already sold out. Sorry, mutants.
